Greenland These are examples images are for costume designs for Howard Brenton's 1988 play "Greenland". I loved imagining how the characters might move and look. The first two designs are of Paul, Lord Ludlow who is a wife-beating debt-ridden capitalist. In the first part of the play all the costumes and set are in black and white. Colour is introduced in the utopian second half . |
The Duchess of Malfi by John Webster
The inspiration for my costume ideas came from the patriarchal obsession with gender ideology, incest, and power. Webster’s play explores the male character’s wish to maintain "pure blood lines" by controlling the Duchess and her class of partner. Blood purity was also part of the Nazi ideology and idea to set the play within this historical period.
Ferdinand, the Duke of Calabria is the Duchess’s of Malfi’s twin brother. Ferdinand has a cruel and terrible temper, and an unhealthy attraction to his sister .
The Cardinal of Aragon, is a cold Machiavellian character who uses torture and power to control the lives of the Duchess and others.
Antonio Bologna, the Duchess’s steward. The Duchess secretly wed Antonio for love. His character is largely passive and powerless.
Julia is the Cardinal’s mistress, who is eventually poisoned by the cardinal.

Don Juan Comes Back From The War
Act One
The War Is Over. Theatre At The Front. The design shows two Soubrettes and Don Juan.
The smile of the Soubrettes reminds Don Juan of a lost love.
He offers her a gift of cigarettes to thank her for reminding him of his past.
